1: Hospitality

This small village with only around 1800 inhabitants, is famous for hospitality, a slow and calm life where you feel the silence enter your body.

The hospitality comes from an ancient story where the people from Greece arrived several thousands of years ago.

In fact, this hospitality has a word which is called Filoxenia.

It derives from the ancient Greek origin and are composted of philos (friend) and xenos (strangers) - and then the word means “love of the stranger”

In 2023, I was in Scilla, and I met Nino. He brought me to Palizzi Marina on the 3th of November 2023, I fell in love with this village.

Later in March 2024, I also had the pleasure to meet Serafina, who is Nino's girlfriend.

Straight after I came to Palizzi Marina in November 2023, I made several new friends, like Totò.

Also today, this love and hospitality is very much how it is in this community. You will instantly feel the way you are welcomed.

People here seek contact, and tourists notice this hospitality.

They say things like this: “The habitants welcome you in a very warm and friendly way, and its like its natural for them”

Another friend I got here is Bruno. He is a handyman, but also like Totò a fisherman.

During the winter I lived in a part of my friend Nino`s house, where I had the pleasure of having oranges and clementines directly in the garden.

I could eat as many as I liked. Luxury and another example of hospitality.

2: A calm life

Often I walk down to the beach, and often I captured videos in the morning, for example the one below from 29 of November 2023.

Another video was the one below from 24. December, such a lovely morning. And during that day, the temperature  was 22 degrees celsius, quite normal.

In the mornings during spring time, April 2024, I met this fisherman, sitting there just overlooking the sea and fishing.

I chose to stay, because I love the silence and calm - I felt it was like a therapy which I didn't know I needed.

I continued to write my book and in 2026 I finally finished it.

The title of the book is From no direction to clear direction - and if seek to find your direction:

3: A stay in Palizzi Marina

These flowers above is called Convolvulus italicus.

Living here, in this small village feels so good. Every day I am so grateful for what I have. There are very few shops, restaurants and bars - but it is more than enough.

Having little is not the same as having a low quality life, in fact as I see it, it's perfect for anybody who seeks to get good friends, feel calm and live slowly.

As I see it, this is a high value you get by staying in Palizzi Marina. The people and their hospitality, the calm life and of course the climate and nature.

Doing something for the community

Well, let's be earnest, even if the nature is stunning, with beautiful beaches, the mountains and the national park close; there is also a backside.

This rural village can have its negative sides. If you are one that seeks the perfect place, with a lot of shops and restaurants, this village might not be for you.

And that's why we have created Capo Sud Grecanica ETS, which is a non profit organisation that focuses on giving something back to the community.

Our goal is to make the village cleaner, more flowers and more welcoming in terms of colors.

We believe by doing this, without changing too much, we are able to do something good both for tourists, but also create more jobs for people who live here. Among our projects we have launched one project that is volunteer work.

Join volunteer projects in Palizzi Marina. Exchange 2–3 hours of daily work for free stay, Italian practice, cultural activities, and community life

Other ideas we have in mind might be to clean and plant beside the main road.

5: This is how to get to Palizzi Marina

By plane

Now, after the new airport in Reggio Calabria is opened in May 2026, you can get here from many cities across Europe and from other cities in Italy.

You can arrive to Reggio Calabria with Ryanair from: London Stansted, Paris (Beauvais, Berlin, Bruxelles (Charleroi), Katowice, Barcelona El Prat, Torino, Milano Malpensa, Pisa, Parma, Bologna, and Venezia Marco Polo.

You can also get to Reggio Calabria with ITA airways from Milano Linate or Rome.

From the airport in Reggio Calabria there are buses to Palizzi Marina that take like an hour. Or you can rent cars at the airport. We recommend Sicily by car or Noleggiare.

By train

On top of that you can arrive in Reggio Calabria Centrale with the high speed train Frecciarossa from major cities in northern Italy. And there are corresponding train to Palizzi Marina, and it takes one hour.

Because there are buses and trains that can bring you to the coastline of the ionian sea side of Calabria, there are almost endless possibilities.

We recommend downloading the app from Treniitalia here, and check the buses on Federico here.

7: How it was in the old days

A friend of mine, Carmelo, brought me up the hills, and I made a video in italian. Check it out here, or if you do not understand Italian yet, read the story below.

He tells a story from when his grandmother and grandmother lived above Palizzi Marina. At that time there were only a few houses at the sea. And his grandparents had a small transportation company.

At the time there were no roads, so they used donkeys or mules.

He told me the doctor said, “Bring the boy in the hills, because there are so fresh and good air.”

These are the stories I like to tell which I love to share with you.
