The importance of Bergamot in daily life and examples of products made with Bergamot.

My name is Roger, and I live on the eastern coast of Calabria, in a small place called Palizzi Marina.

I wrote this article about Bergamot in Norwegian in 2023, and now I have translated it into English so hopefully a wider audience of people can get to know this extraordinary citrus fruit.

This is not a sponsored article, we just want to share more about this amazing citrus fruit, and show you some products made with Bergamot.

1: This is how Bergamot often can be used in daily life

In Calabria, bergamot is used in many different ways. It is a way to live through the benefits many local products give pleasure.

Some people simply eat the fruit fresh. The taste is slightly bitter, but refreshing.

I was once served a homemade bergamot drink by my “Italian family” in Palizzi Marina. It had a sharp citrus flavour, balanced by a natural sweetness.

Others make marmellata di bergamotto — bergamot marmalade — while many prefer it pressed into juice or used in drinks.

2: Examples of products

So Patea makes other products that aren't just juice, the one below it is a creamy liquor.

And below you also have this example for disinfecting hands.

Well, for that reason, you could just cut a Bergamot in two and wash your hands - literally rub your hands and fingers with the juice.

Bergamot also appears in icecream, granita, liquors, pasta and sweets, but also cakes, biscuits and candies.

Outside Calabria, most people probably know bergamot from Earl Grey tea, which is flavoured with essential oil extracted from the fruit.

Icecream (gelato)

Gelateria Cesare in Reggio Calabria are famous for their icecream, and of course to the make ice cream with the taste of Bergamot. When in Reggio...

Granita

Bergamot is also used to make granita, even if the image above shows other flavors, just to imagine how tasty it is.

Liquors (amaro)

Jefferson, which is a liquor famous all over the world, also contains Bergamot.

Also Kaciuto is made with extracts from Bergamot.

Their slogan says:

L`amaro da sempre piaciuto, which means something like: "You have also liked it, even if you didn't know it existed."

Pasta

Even some pasta producers have made the pasta taste with a special freshness, add some particularity and bombined with a tomato-based ragù and fresh basil.

It adds a subtle citrus note and a gentle bitterness.

Sweets

Also when it comes to sweets, there are added flavours from Bergamot. Some are soft inside and leave a fresh citrus taste that lasts for a long time.

3: Products that use Bergamot oil

Because of its aroma, bergamot essential oil is used in a wide range of products:

Aromatherapy
Bergamot oil is often used in aromatherapy because of its fresh and calming scent. It is commonly found in essential oil blends, diffusers, and fragrance lamps.

Candles
Many scented candles contain bergamot oil to create a mild and relaxing atmosphere indoors.

Soaps and shower gels
Bergamot is also used in soaps and shower products, leaving a clean citrus fragrance on the skin.

Hair care
Some shampoos, conditioners, and hair oils include bergamot oil both for its scent and for its balancing effect on the scalp.

Tea
As mentioned earlier, bergamot oil is the defining flavour of Earl Grey tea.

Certain natural skincare products use bergamot oil because of its antiseptic properties and fresh scent.

When choosing products containing bergamot essential oil, it is worth paying attention to ingredient quality and avoiding unnecessary additives.
