Calabria launches an innovative project to revitalize its villages

The Calabria region has launched a new and innovative initiative aimed at combating depopulation and revitalizing small villages across the region.

The Region of Calabria has approved a new resolution, currently in the pilot phase of a project called Ripopola Calabria.

Through this project, financial support is available for purchasing and renovating homes in villages with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants.

One example is Palizzi, a municipality with a population of 1,826 as of December 2025.

The available support can reach up to €2,000 per square meter, with a maximum contribution of €280,000 per housing unit.

The objective is clear:
to revitalize Calabria’s small towns by giving unused properties new value and transforming them into homes for people willing to relocate to Calabria for at least ten years.

Program phases

Phase 1: Registration of potential applicants

This phase is intended for those who would like to receive more information about potential and available properties included in this project.

Phase 2: Project presentation

The properties presented in later stages will be properly registered by the municipality, approved by the Calabria region, compliant with urban planning regulations, and designated for residential use.

Housing solutions suitable for different family types will be prioritized, ranging from single-person homes to larger properties for families.

Phase 3: Applications from interested buyers

Once the first two phases, including mapping of available properties, are completed, an online showcase of available homes will be launched.

Eligible projects include architectural design, renovations, seismic improvements, energy efficiency upgrades, as well as technical work and costs up to completion of a finished home.

Projects requiring the use of new land will not be eligible. This program applies exclusively to the purchase and renovation of existing properties.
