With Palizzi Marina as your base...
...you can explore wild nature, forests, mountains and other places that are easy to reach by car or public transport.Â
Reggio Calabria
While you are here, you may also want to visit Reggio Calabria if you feel like shopping or enjoying a bit of city life without too much stress.
How to get from Palizzi Marina to Reggio Calabria:
You can either go by train or by bus. Both take an hour. In the morning there are several possibilities, and you can go back in the evening with the last train 20:08 from Reggio Calabria Centrale.
Bova
Bova is considered the “capital” of Area Grecanica, once known as Bovesia.
Here, where Greek history and culture still live between the narrow alleys, you can walk around and enjoy views of the beautiful landscape from high above the coast.Â

I recommend going by car. You can eventually ask Roger if there are any events or groups you can join.
Palizzi
Palizzi, also called Palizzi Superiore, is the original Palizzi built during the Middle Ages.  The town was once a lively centre where people stayed protected from pirates arriving by sea.

The best way is to go by car, scooter or bicycle. Of course, you can also walk, it takes around two and a half hours each way.
Pietrapennata
When I took this photo, I met a man from Reggio Calabria called Marcello. He said: “This is where I bring people. Then we sit down and listen to the silence.”
Pietrapennata is a small village in the municipality of Palizzi, and many people have moved away over the years.
Today, only 23 people live here permanently. Others live in Palizzi Marina and also keep a house in Pietrapennata.
The village is a great starting point for walks and hikes into the Aspromonte National Park.

If you go by your own car, we recommend doing both Palizzi and Pietrapennata on the same trip.Â

It is one of many villages located in the mountains above the Ionian coast, and part of the Area Grecanica region.
The Ionian coast has many interesting places to explore, so we recommend taking a look around — especially if you are searching for lesser-known places.

Ask us if we have any programmed cultural activities, or you can go by your own card. You can also go from Pientrapennata to Staiti.
Mammola
Further away you will find Mammola, a town known for the way restaurants prepare Norwegian stockfish. But there is much more to discover there, so take a look at the Mammola travel guide as well.

Gerace
And once you have visited Mammola, you can continue up to the medieval town of Gerace. Together, these two towns make a very nice day trip. And remember to try a granita while you are there.
